Meter readings and bills — getting set up correctly

Submitting accurate meter readings on day one prevents estimated bills and disputes.

Find your meters

• Electric and gas meters are often in cupboards, meter boxes or communal areas
• Photograph readings and serial numbers for your records

Tell your suppliers

• If unsure who supplies, use MPAN/MPRN lookup tools or ask your DNO/water company
• Put accounts in your name from your tenancy start date

Direct debits and tariffs

• Set up payment details early to avoid late fees
• Consider fixed vs variable tariffs based on usage
