Move-in day checklist for tenants in Nottingham

1 min read

Moving home is busy. Here’s a clear checklist to make your first day smooth.

1) Collect keys and confirm access

  • Bring photo ID when collecting keys
  • Check you have keys/fobs for the front door, mailbox, bin store and any communal areas
  • Test the keys work before leaving

2) Review and sign the inventory

  • Read the inventory carefully and note any discrepancies right away
  • Take clear, date‑stamped photos of each room, fixtures and any marks or wear
  • Email any notes/photos within the timeframe in your agreement (typically 7 days)

3) Take meter readings on day one

  • Gas, electricity and water (if metered)
  • Photograph each meter showing the reading and serial number
  • Submit to your supplier(s); if you’re unsure who supplies, use the MPAN/MPRN lookup tools on your DNO/Gas transporter sites

4) Set up utilities and internet

  • Contact current suppliers to put accounts in your name from your move‑in date
  • Choose a broadband plan; many providers can switch remotely but book installations early

5) Check safety features

  • Test smoke/CO alarms
  • Locate fuse board, stopcock, boiler controls and isolation valves

6) Waste and recycling

  • Note collection days, bin locations and any local council rules

7) Report issues quickly

  • If you find anything not working as expected, raise it promptly using the agreed reporting route

Staying organised on day one protects your deposit later and sets the tone for a great tenancy.
